Top Police Official is Furious with Governor Christie

David Matthau
The head of the Jersey Fraternal Order of Police is blasting Governor Christie - for not communicating with union leadership before unveiling a package of bills designed to let towns cap salary increases for public workers, and modify civil services rules.

FOP President Ed Brannigan says "he never once reached out to the unions, whether it's police, fire, or whatever unions, to consult with us and talk about the issues…civil service has been in effect since the late 1800's…and is there to protect public workers from political cronyism…that's not the reason that the state has these problems today - he's vilifying the police and fire and public workers, and that's simply wrong."

He adds Christie "definitely has to do something with communications…to come out and try to force this down your throat…he shouldn't be doing this…he's not even working with the other branches of government by coming out and throwing these 33 bills on the table without anyone even seeing them - where's the input? There's normally input on legislation - so where is it? Strictly from him?"

Brannigan also says Christie "is not reaching out to anyone- in my opinion, he'd rather stand there and pick on all of us," and he needs to remember "he's a Governor - not a dictator."

Nothing against police or fire depts, but we have too many districts, too many pensions to support. Pesnions based on the final 2 years worked, and then they just work as much OT as possible those last 2 years. Dishonest at best.

I reviewed an artical posted, I believe it was the Bergan record/ Herald news, but it was a survey of police salaries in the area. Wayne the base pay is $125,000 and they declared overtime of another $50,000 thats $175,000 a year Folks!!!. The local paper Wayne today cites some retirements at the age of 46 thats Forty Six!!. Medical benefits for life and an unbelievable salary. Thats not all remember their 46, they take another job in another town, or to really rub it in the tax payers nose in the same town for another you guessed it a BIG salary. I ask you if they can work why are they retir

I understand why Christie is not communicating because the civil service workers just don't get it and communicating with them will do no good!. In my opinion, this reform is long overdue and civil servants NEED TO UNDERSTAND CHANGE IS NECESSARY TO ALL THIS DISGRACEFUL WASTE

And people wonder why police harass the public writing tickets. for $$$ only. Why does a township of 1500 residents need a police force of over 150 ? They validate their jobs by writing tickets. Shamefull !
tired of it

I just met someone retired at 41 with full benefits and a nice pension. Who else can do that on the taxpayers back? They get promotions right before retirement in my town (happened 3 times that I know of) to assistant captain and then retire making additional money. My taxes just went us so my mortgage is 233 more a month to support these pensions. Go Gov Christie, I will back you all the way.

I would like to present an interesting scenerio. You buy a house, make repairs remodel the kitchen-your taxes go up. You put on a deck or addition- your taxes go up, you spend a thousand hours of your time; nights and weekends finnishing your basement-your taxes go up. Say your taxes are $12,000 then in a few short years their $18,000 at your breaking point of mortage and taxes you can no longer can afford the house. The government whom FORCED you out of your home, indirectly, you sell, The family moves out of state and as a fairwell salute there is an exhite tax in which this blotted gover

These animals dare tell the public the 6 percent raise is FOR THE CHILDREN, a partial payment for health care WILL HURT THE CHILDREN. The NJEA should absolutly be ashamed of themselves with their greed and unwillingness to change who do they thick they are a special class in our society. Whiney Cry Babies

Are you kidding me. How whiney. "wah wah, Governo Christie actually is taking a leadership position when previously Governor's just laid down and took it and that's not fair..wah wah.." Seriously. Grow up. Yay for Governor Christie
Truth
By Dave Robinson on 05/13/2010 3:42PM
It appears the only crybabies are those who are sniveling on this site. To retain experienced and well qualified law enforcement employees, they must be compensated. Those who are unemployed and willing to work for less may not even qualify and will haveno experience. You will pay more in lawsuits for incompetence than you would save. Good luck.
I feel I deserve the highest salary, because its ME
By kevin on 05/13/2010 4:15PM
To obtain those experienced and qualified individuals does that mean the rest of society needs to be Raped. Every public employee feels they deserve a million dollars a year, THATS WHY THE STATE AND SOON TO BE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ARE BROKE. Watch Greece for gods sake. To receive quality milk does that mean a gallon should cost $32.50, the farmer works hard, put in their time why not pay them a million a year so the price of milk can go up thats what you are saying.
Well
By Don Johnson on 05/13/2010 4:33PM
No one is raping the public. One could agree there are a few extreme cases and they should be dealt with. To generalize all law enforcement as greedy or overpaid is inaccurate. Generally police and state law enforcement are paid based on the cost of living in their area. Overinflated salaries, last minute raises and ridiculous retirement cash-ins should be capped for sure. Many towns have capped their retirement cash-ins for years. Those who have been responsible will not suffer for the few who have abused the system. As far as pensions go, if the state is not funding it, they have no say on h
Intelligence
By Phil on 05/13/2010 5:07PM
The old cliche, "Penny wise and pound foolish" seems to be coming in to play. Luckily for all New Jerseyans, there are enough intelligent lawmakers in the state house that will render Christie's 33 bills to nothing more than 33 crumbledpieces of paper. He should be concentrating his time on issues that are actually urgent and ruining the state financially and otherwise.
Attention Don Johnson
By kevin on 05/13/2010 6:14PM
"as far as pensions go, if the state is not funding it they have no say" Thankyou Don thats the whole point!!! The towns may over pay there employees; Superintendants $250,000, elementary school asst media specialist $88,000, Wayne police officer $175,000. The towns give away money because the STATE will bale them out. The governor CUT funds to stop towns from abuse of the pay role, so yes the state has a say. Thats the battle of public worker and the tax payer.
Real attention
By TaxMan on 05/13/2010 6:49PM
I think the Wayne case is excessive overtime due to a lack of manpower. Another case of penny wise, pound foolish. Just cut needed positions to make it look like savings, then complain when overtime must be paid to cover the cuts. Every move the Governor has made thus far has caused taxes to rise faster than it ever did in the past. This will not continue because the majority of the states's lawmakers will not allow this foolishness to continue. Certain things can and should be cut, others cannot. I'll pay my taxes before I accept mayhem. And to all of those greedy small business own
Attn Again
By To: Att Don Johnson on 05/13/2010 7:30PM
First of all, it goes right the the heart of the matter that if the state doesn't fund it, they cannot have a say or control in it. Second, the reason some of these positions pay so much is because certain positions require qualified people. You can't even spell payroll much less even know what your talking about. You're not even qualified enough to make a comment. Just pay your taxes foolish one.
Stop all state aid
By kevin on 05/13/2010 8:58PM
If the town can afford the salaries they have been paying why do they need state aid. The state does supplement the towns, then they have a say. Why should a town benefit and receive aid from the state. You pay a principle $125,000-175 grand a year your on your own! Wayne, lack of manpower? they have a small army. You can always tell the public worker, they just feed off the system. Toll taker $80,000 a year??? I mean New Jersey liason.
Cry baby cry
By keith on 05/14/2010 3:18AM
Another individual crying because in the past the Governor just bent over and did whatever they demanded, which of course wasn't in the best interest of the people who have to pay the bill. After many years, they are being told "no" for the first time, and they can't handle it. How juvenile the people that represent these groups are. Cry baby cry, because the huge taxes you've caused us have many taxpayers crying as they lose their jobs and homes.
Buck Up Unions. Buck Up.
By Just A Girl in NJ on 05/14/2010 1:18PM
I understand that it’s the Unions’ jobs to fight for the rights of the people who work under them. But when we fight to the extent that we are bankrupting government, there is a self-destructive streak that can not be denied. What is more important? Rectifying and resurrecting government so it works for the people, not against all of us? Or political agendas and a greed that can not be denied and is relatable to lions fighting over the last little bits of a dead carcass. Right now, NJ government is that dead carcass! And if we keep up with business as usual we will all ultimately starve. W
Wow
By Just the truth on 05/14/2010 3:12PM
If any of you actually knew what you were talking about, you would know that the police, fire and ems services and they're pensions are not what is bankrupting the state and causing the mess. Nor are they responsible for your high tax increases. Whats causing it are the schools, state mismanagement of funds and excess, unnecessary services by municipalities.
Good Job Gov. Christie, ignore the greedy cry babies
By Robby on 05/14/2010 3:28PM
Keep it up Gov. Majority of NJ residents (sane ones) are on your side. It's about time we kick these greedy pigs in the rear. These people crying for money are spoilt brats. Spoilt by corrupt Democrats and past Governors.
Tax Cheats
By Tax Man on 05/14/2010 3:40PM
Oh, the greedy tax cheating crybabys better known as small business owners. Not paying your full tax is what is causing this problem. Better watch, the tax man is on to you.
what do you think
By kevin on 05/14/2010 6:16PM
Question for just the truth. How long do you think these small towns can pay a regular rank and file police officer $125,000 base pay, $50,000 in overtime,(WAYNE NJ) thats $175,000 a year and retire at an age in the Forties ?? at a good pay and benefits for life.Say retire at 45, with an expected life span of at least 30 years. The tax payers need to pay someone longer in retirement then they actually worked. Holy Crap.
By the way did you hear
By kevin on 05/14/2010 6:22PM
Announced today on the news again a school superintendant whom was suspended with pay of course, is leaving the town with a little over a million. Payment in full for their contract, unused sick time, unused vacation, factored in the raise they would have gotten. But lets all remmeber the NJEA motto. "ITS FOR THE CHILDREN" !!!
To Kevin
By Truth on 05/14/2010 7:45PM
I believe the Wayne issue was explained above. Penny wise, pound foolish. Cut manpower, spend twice as much in overtime. As for your second comment, this article is about police and emergency services, not the schools. The schools are indeed another matter. To be addressed separately. The schools are causing your high taxes, not police and fire.
Need to be Concern
By DS on 05/14/2010 9:07PM
All you people who support this dictator of a Governor needs to wake-up. Although, i agree that change is needed it does not mean that his way is the only way. I saw our Governor say today that he has not problem with arguing with peopl but how can he argue when he doesn't talk to anyone. Watch out this is a dictator in the making.
Cry Babies !
By Get Real on 05/14/2010 9:36PM
Teachers, Police, Fire, and all other civil service workers that want to belong to a union, If you are all so smart you should start and maintain your own benifit and pension plans like any other "Real" Union. Then you won't have anything or anyone to complain about. If you were smart you would have done it a long time ago. Wise up!
To Get Real
By PJR on 05/14/2010 11:33PM
Police and fire do have their own pension, it's called the Police and Firemen Retirement System. It's by police and fire for police and fire. Additionally, police and fire contribute much more to their pensions than teachers and other govt. employees do. That's the problem, you all comment and complain without knowing the facts. Come back and cry when you know what you're talking about.
How about some truth?
By Just the facts on 05/15/2010 7:31AM
Get the facts before you post people. Police and fire pension is based on the last years BASE salary. They can work all the OT they want and it will not affect how much they get in their pension. Police & Fire also pay 8.5% toward their pensions. Teachers pay a paltry 5.5%. Don't believe everything the old man on the morning show says.
consolidation to the truth
By kevin on 05/15/2010 8:50AM
I believe you didn,t hear what I said, Wayne under staffed, cutting man power?. The Wayne force is hugh, we do not need a police officer at every traffic light, do we. Furthermore, the total number of police officers, chiefs, asst chiefs, captains, watchcommanders, 3 strips SGT.,and patrolman per town. an area survey can show a force of hundreds. And still a salary of $175,000 a year?? and retirement when, so don,t say a penny foolish how about millions foolish.
Dictator support
By kevin on 05/15/2010 8:59AM
You are right he is attacking, like the other governors did anything to stop the abuse. Corzine wraped himself around the unions, Loretta Weinberg as Lt. Gov. that would have helped everything right?.We could have just sent are pay checks right to the teachers union as direct deposite.Finnaly a governor who stands up, like Sweeny is not a problem. Union leader, negotiating contracts, then passing bills to suport the unions!Greece here we come...
False Promise in order to get elected it seems
By Randy on 05/15/2010 10:46AM
Christie may be accused of going back on campaign promises. Last fall, while running against then-Gov. Jon S. Corzine, Christie said he would seek to put new workers in a 401(k) and roll back the 9 percent pension-benefit increase, but not otherwise reduce pensions for current workers."You have to keep faith with those people," he said in October. "They made plans for their life based on that."I read the above in an article in the courier post. I guess its official no politicians are slaves to the truth
